This I Believe

The old saying, “Laughter is the best medicine” is all too true. Laughter heals everything, if not forever, for the moment. Even if times are getting hard, it’s okay to laugh, because laughter, well laughter heals.

I believe laughter is always best when it’s unexpected. When you’re in a tough situation, or you’re stressed out, it always feels good to be able to laugh about something, anything.

I remember when my dad told my family two years ago that he had to go over to Afghanistan. I didn’t want to hear what he had to say because I knew exactly what he was going to say before he said it. I walked away before he could tell me with tears streaming down my face. I couldn’t take it, I knew what could happen if he went overseas. Him and my mom followed me and talked to me about it. After talking to me and my sister for a while, my dad cracked a corny joke, like he always does and it helped me get through that difficult time. It was just what I needed.

I believe in the kind of laughter that happens between family and friends. When I’m just sitting at home with my family, and we make fun of each other, not to be mean, just to be funny, it is wonderful; even when I’m trying to be funny and start dancing and singing, it always seems to crack my family and myself up. This happens so often, there’s a lot of laughter going on. I love to act the same way around my friends, to make them laugh. When they’re going through a hard time, or are stressed out, I love to make them laugh, so I act silly to do so. Yea, it might be a little embarrassing for me to just start dancing or singing in front of random people, but I don’t care. It makes others laugh, and it makes me laugh, as well.

I believe in being the kind of person who laughs at my own lame jokes, and I am definitely not ashamed of this. If something’s funny, I laugh, even when the hilarity is coming from me.

Laughing is one of the healthiest things a person can do. I hear it makes you live longer, and it helps form rock hard abs. I once read somewhere that “The best kind of laughter is when you start laughing and can’t stop, and in that moment you forget about everything else going on in the world, just in that instant,” and this I believe. If you can laugh about something, and forget about everything else, then you are healed, just for that moment, because laughter is the best medicine.
