I am from blankets wrapped around us, from lavender scented Downy and an assortment of shoes found in the mudroom. I am from the numerous family pictures in the house, the kitchen table that serves as a gathering place, and the dogs that run up to the door when a guest comes over. I am from lilacs that grow in my grandparent’s garden, and the fuchsias hanging from the porch in the summer sun. I am from “And you know why?” and giving many hugs, from Aunt Becky and Grandma Shirley and my last name, which is Greek. I am from Menomonee Falls, Germany, England< France, Czechoslovakia, from cheesy potatoes and guacamole. From the Christmas Eve when my sister was three and drank our family member’s grasshoppers, from building forts by hanging sheets over clothes lines outside and drinking lemonade, and from feeding calves and taking care of hogs in Nebraska. I am from dressers, walls, desks, and tables that have been passed down through generation.
