“What is it like to be an American?” foreigners ask me. And there are several ways to explain it.
The United States is not perfect. We have our issues in government, and we don’t share the same beliefs. We argue about immigration issues, but we are all immigrants ourselves. We disagree on gay marriage, but one thing’s for sure: we are all Americans.

In America, we have Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Jews, Buddhists, and many more. We are vastly different from each other, but somehow we make life in the United States work. I could go to downtown Milwaukee and find Mexican, African, Arabic, German, Greek, French and many other types of food. Our cultures and customs have been combined, which has allowed us to become who we are today.

  My favorite part about America is no matter how different I am from the next person, whether it be my beliefs or my skin color, we are one big family. We can disagree, but when disaster strikes, we are here for one another. This was proved on 9/11 and hurricane Katrina. We mourned our fellow fallen American’s. Candle lightings were held and many raised their flags with pride.

Being an american is a proud feeling. I feel comforted knowing that we have gotten through many obstacles along the way and have overcome our failures.--- and to me, that is what being an American is all about.
