Beep. Beep. Beep. The slow beeping of the heart monitor enters my ears and seeps into my still throbbing head. Carefully opening my eyes; barely moving my head to look around. The door opens shining light in my dark room. Frantic, I remember my sister with me in the car. Scanning the room I start panicking when I noticed she is not in the room with me. The nurse walks in to check my monitor, slowly moving head looking toward her trying to speak the words, “Where’s Shawna? Is she okay?”
Looking at me with worry “She is in surgery” pronounced the nurse. My eyes full with tears and cautiously I lay down trying ease the pain from my head. Falling into a deep sleep, starting to realize what had happened…
“Hey turn the radio.” Moving toward the radio
She laughs “Why, I like this song”
“So, what’s your point? I don’t” as I turn my head to look at her. I reach for the dial.
“Fine put the cd one.”
“Slow down Led Foot Lucy speed limit is only fifty”
“Oh clam down killer I am only going sixty”
“Have you not noticed where we are yet?”
“No, where?”
“In Anderson with a bunch of idiots that don’t know how to drive.”
“Yeah that, I know.”
“You hate going to Anderson, so why drive like’em?”
“Whatever, I’m still changing the radio”
“No, don’t change my station”
“Shut up, you’re driving pay attention to the road. You can’t do two things at once. So just watch the road.”
“Whatever, man you make me mad!”
“That’s what I’m here for, thanks to mom and dad.”
“Haha, you’re real funny”
“Yeah tell me about it”
“Shut up I was being smart”
“Go figure, when are you not?”
“RED LIGHT, SLOW DOWN!”
Both “AHHHH”
Tossing and turning I wake up to my sister beside me.
“We’re here now” our parents on either side of our beds
Turning to my sister, we slowly are able to give each other a grin.
To be continued…
