Why are we us?

"Human nature is one of those things that everybody talks about but no one can define precisely. Every time we fall in love, fight with our spouse, get upset about the influx of immigrants into our country, or go to church, we are, in part, behaving as a human animal with our own unique evolved nature—human nature" says Alan S. Miller and Satoshi Kanazawa in the article they wrote that was posted on Psychology Today. So how are we so much more complex than other animals? No one really knows why but there are theories. I am going to tell you about three of the better theories written by great philosophers that i have read and then what i think.
The first philosopher is known as Sigmund Freud. One of his beliefs is that desire is the essence of a human being; which means that we run on what we want or goals we set. He also says that society represses desire because of the demands of objective reality and as an expression of certain desires; which means that just because something is wanted or a goal is set it won't be easy to get or reach. It will be challenging and it will have to be earned. This is just one point of view.
The second philosopher is known as Thomas Hobbes. Thomas' beliefs were very different and one of them is that Natural human state is a war of every man against every man. which implies that not everyone is out to do good. Another belief that he had is that people are self-centered, driven by 'a perpetual and restless desire for power after power the ceases only in death. as you can see that Thomas Hobbes has a totally different view than the first philosopher.
The last philosopher i am going to tell you about is some where in the middle of the first two philosophers. John Locke believed that the human mind is a blank tablet at birth. Adding onto that he also said that human development is determined by education and social organizations, for good and evil. i think that this theory is the best because it gives me the feeling of freedom and the power to make choices for myself.
There are many theories about why we are the way we are and know one knows for sure because everyone is different. That is why i like just being me and not worrying about why. Just living life making decisions and never looking back so next time your wondering remind yourself that you are you and it doesn't matter why.
