Take the Oscars as an example. The Oscars is a famous awards ceremony which consists of 93% of whites. Living in a world revolving around “whiteness” restricts all races from having an equal representation in media. In Sammy Park’s “Media & Me,” he demonstrates this idea of wanting to represented. Movies, books, tv shows, etc. mostly consist of having white main characters, with the media favoring the white race.
In his article, he states, “ I started to view myself as a background character in my own story.” With so much “whiteness” in this world, people of other races often feel excluded from having the capabilities in which whites have. As a chinese person, Park opened my feelings to admit about how I feel irrelevant for not being demonstrated as much as others in society.
