The poem "Dear Legged People" by Alajandra Marquez, portrays what it is like to be disabled in today's society. She does this beautifully in 11 stanzas by describing her own experiences with different people who don't look at her with equality but with pity and sorrow. Marquez explains how their stares burn through her skin and how being in a wheelchair belittles her importance in this world.

This poem served as a reality-check. More people should understand that treating a person with a disability kindly because it counts as your "daily act of kindness" doesn't do the person any good and only makes them feel worse about themselves. After reading Marquez's poem, I knew that I have done some of these things such as stared at people with disabilities or treated them with pity. However, this article reversed my whole perspective and made me realize thats it's about time I changed. And for that, Marquez, I thank you
