I love/I hate

Dear Editor,

The April 2014 issue of the Teen Ink magazine was an event of many firsts: It was my first Teen Ink magazine, my first publication irreversibly on paper and my first realisation of my unextraordinaryness.

On top of this is was also a chance to wonder at the writing of other teens; especially ‘I like/I hate’ by Sami Ng. I loved the way it was so simplistic in style – just a list really – but somehow contained so much insight and so much power. I loved the way it made me think of me. I loved the way it was sad, funny and honest. I loved the way it ingeniously put two things one after the other to magnify them ‘I hate myself. I hate short pencils’ as though the two things were on the same scale. I loved the way I felt like I knew the writer even though I’d never met them. I loved the origionality.

I hated the fact that it was too good an idea to be reused. I hate the way that I’d look foolish if I tried. I hated the way it made me admit I was human.

Yours sincerely
C. Sleeman
