In Kellen G’s article, “Suspend Suspensions,” she argues that out-of-school suspension is an ineffective method of punishment for many reasons. Firstly, suspended students miss out on important class time and often don’t get to make up the work they missed. Second, for students who have been suspended often, it is more of a reward than punishment because they get to skip school. Additionally, suspension has negative effects on students. It makes them believe they are worth less than others and they gain a trouble-making reputation. Suspended students are more likely to drop out of high school.

Kellen uses many statistics and real studies to back up her claims. Her article brings up many good points that I was not previously aware of. There are other methods of punishment for students who break the rules, so out-of-school suspension is not necessary. This penalty should be banned because it has more disadvantages than benefits for students.
