Our One and Only Home

In today’s world there are only so many things we can care and worry about in our busy lives. Sadly, our environment is not one of them. What people don’t realize is that we are slowly destroying our planet in ways we wouldn’t even think twice about. We are making a horrible imprint on Earth and leaving it in much worse shape than we found it. For example, haze has settled over cities and once green fertile lands have become desert. Also, in the past 40 years as much as 20 percent of the rainforest has been cut down for industrial purposes. Not to mention the many species of animals that are going extinct. People just want fast and easy and I can’t blame them because I am a victim of this as well. I like to have nice cars, fast food, nice clothes, and easy transportation. Who doesn’t? But all this damage is not good and will not only affect our future but the future of many generations to come. Us humans are making an unescapable hole for ourselves by trying to make everything more convenient and upgraded when we should be taking action.

What we can do to take action isn’t as hard as it would seem. If everyone took tiny steps to help it could be a huge ripple effect. For example, recycle. A plastic bottle takes about 450 years to decompose! All you have to do is separate your plastics and cans. It also doesn’t hurt to reuse things like plastic bags and cups. When you want to get rid of books or clothes, dont throw them away but donate them.

Another huge step, is to make sure you conserve energy because the less resources we use, the better. When you leave a room in your house make sure to turn out the lights. If you have a leaky faucet, fix it, because if every second there was a drop of water it adds up to become gallons. And if you live nearby things try to take a bike instead of using your car or getting a ride. It’s also good excersise.

One of the most important things is to keep everyone informed on the ways we can help protect the environment. Keep your family and friends aware of how vital it is to recycle and keep neighborhoods clean. Let them know what you can do to keep from our lands filling with waste and how you can conserve energy. So if you want to be able to have a clean environment for ourselves and the future generations to come, make sure you take these steps to help protect our one and only home.
