ACT I
Scene 1
A boy and girl of fourteen sit in two chairs. They are PETER and GWEN. Behind them are stone faced actors, staring straight. All are unaware of each other, spaced far apart. Their actions should indicate the boy and girl are in different rooms. The boy and girl are texting each other.
Person behind PEter
Party tonight. You in Peter?
Person behind Gwen
Be there in five Gwen.
Scene 2
Everyone but Peter clears the stage. He walks away, but a grown woman steps onto the stage. She is DARLENE. They argue inaudibly for a while, then pause, defeated.
DARLENE
You're not going.
Peter
Why won't you let me be like other kids Darlene?
DARLENE
I...I'm just trying to protect you.
PETER
Why?
DARLENE
Because you are all that I have left damn it! Because your my son!
Scene 3
The stage clears. A lone shady man is now revealed in the middle of the stage, sitting casually on a chair. He is JAMES. Peter walks by him, and James smiles.
James
A bit late isn't it?
PETER
Back off.
JAMES
Easy. I'm a friend. My name's James. What are you doing here?
PETER
Running away. I can't be with...her anymore.
JAMES
I understand. Perhaps I can help
Peter stares at James, expectant.
JAMES(CONT'D)
You want time away from mommy dearest I'm guessing. I deal in time.
Peter turns to walk away, but JAMES stops him
JAMES(CONT'd)
Just give it a try. You'll be hooked.
James produces a watch, and hands it Peter. He, smiles, and then backs away.
JAMES(CONT'D)
Turn it clockwise to grow up. Enjoy.
James exits stage left, and Peter paces, eventually stopping center stage. He takes a breath and then winds the watch. He stumbles backward onto the chair, and shakes. Suddenly, the movement stops.
Scene 4
A moment passes, and then a woman walks on stage carrying a folder. She is LILY.
PETER
Where am I?
Lily
At your desk, ten minutes late I might add. Pete, get it together.
PETER
It's Peter
LILY
There's no I in team Pete. I need you to step up.
PETER
It's Peter.
LILY
Your quarterlies are off, and that's not the kind of thing we stand for here Pete.
PETER
Peter.
LILY
Shape up Pete or....
Peter stands, indignant.
PETER
My name is Peter! And you will call me Peter!
LILY
Well Peter, you're out of a job.
Lily walks off stage right, taking Peter's chair. Peter throws his watch down, panting, then kneels to examine it.
(Frantic)
Oh God! Oh God it's broken. I need to find mom. She'll fix this.
Scene 5
Peter runs to the side of a stage, and knocks on an imaginary door. Two people answer him. They are JOHN and LIZA.
Liza
Yes Peter? What can we do for you?
PETER
Who are you? How do you know me.
John
Liza and John of course. You sold us this house. It belonged to your mother. Are you alright?
PETER
(Breaking down)
Where's my mommy? Tell me.
JOHN
Peter your mother's been dead thirty years now. You know that.
PETER
Thank you for your time.
Scene 6
The stage clears, and a woman enters, sitting on the floor center stage. She is ANGEl. Peter rushes by her, but she yells, stopping him.
Angel
Hey! You owe Croc for rent man. He doesn't like delays.
PETER
Who are you?
ANGEL
Very funny. But seriously, you need to get the money together.
(BEAT)
Wait a minute, why are you so nervous? Did you see him again!? You looked me in the eye and said "Angel, I'm through with him!"
PETER
Wait... who am I seeing.
ANGEL
You know damn well who. You and that time guy...
PETER
You need to tell me where he is.
ANGEL
You were just there, figure it out.
PETER
Tell me!
ANGEL
You go, and we're through. He's two blocks over.
Scene 7
Peter and James stand on opposite sides of the stage. James walks toward Peter with an extended hand.
JAMES
Back for another...
James stops to look at Peter, and then bursts into laughter.
Oh my God, you finally arrived. I mean, the conscious you.
PETER
Send me back.
JAMES
Why?
PETER
It's not any better here. In fact, it's worse. It wasn't perfect there, but at least I had help.
JAMES
Have it your way.
Scene 8
The stage clears except for Peter. Gwen enters from the opposite side. She stares at Peter, a bit angry.
Gwen
Why did you skip out on my party.
PETER
Is it you?
GWEN
Who else would it be?
PETER
Gwen, I like you, but I don't want to rush this, or anything.
Scene 9
Gwen exits, and Peter's Mom enters. She has her arms crossed.
PETERS MOM
I've been thinking... and if this party REALLY means that much I guess...
Peter runs to his mother and hugs her tight.
PETER
