be a kind sweet man wearing a sweat suit bring his fiancé a cup of

tea on the eve of their wedding. The surprise on his face when he

meets his niece will be noticable. He has only been in Crowside

for a few months.
UNSEEN CHARACTERS-
Prophet and God, the brother's father- Both characters are

unseen, but spoken about at length.

Scene 1

(Lights come up on a beige blanket[DL] representing sand, a green

blanket [C] with a deck, bench, and chessboard [UR]) Lillith sits on

beige blanket(mimicking sand) staring out at audience and

Melody walks in front of her.

Lillith
You're blocking my view.

Melody
Excuse me?

Lillith
The view, I mean you're a beautiful woman, but I'd rather watch the sunset.

Melody
Oh, sorry, isn't it great?
(moves upstage two steps and sits next to LILLITH)

Lillith
It is. In a world that is constantly changing in the sun still rises every morning and sets every night.

Melody
(snaps photograph)

I'm just trying to capture enough photos of the sunsets before my fiance and I leave.

Lillith
Why would you ever leave this sleepy little town on the coast. Rumor has it that since that pastor died last year things are just starting to get exciting.

Melody
Well we are only leaving for a month... (pause) And this town is just as sleepy as ever, the new pastor just isn't as strict as my father was.

Lillith
Your father? You're Melody? Melody Saint?!? Hi, Aunt Melody! I'll be your niece tomorrow!

Melody
Oh? You're Michael's niece? He said you and your father couldn't make it... It is very nice to meet you Lillith LeVay.

Lillith
He said we couldn't make it? How could we miss it?! Daddy will be here in a little while. The family has been waiting forever for that Uncle of mine to meet his match. He sure is a lucky man... Look at those eyes, oh and that hair!
(pokes and prods MELODY a little)

Melody
(squirms at the invasion of privacy)
Thank you, b-but really I'm the lucky one...

Lillith
Well you don't seem nervous about the big day at all, I expected the blushing bride to be a jumble of nerves on the eve of her wedding.

Melody
I'm not! Not really anyway. It is just a day.
(starts fidgeting with camera, speaking faster)
I'm more nervous about the rest of our lives, We've only known eachother six months and they say when you marry a person you marry their family and this is the first time I'm meeting you. My mother died in child birth and my father died in the fire last year so I don't have a family for him to marry. Except the town. They are sort of like my family, and I'm leaving them for a whole month without anyone to run the church. And I'm leaving the sunsets for a month. And I'm rambling to a woman who is practically a stranger.

Lillith
(removes sunglasses and leans back)
Firstly, this time tomorrow I'll be your family if that is what you want, and secondly, if it isn't, you could run.

(fiddles with MELODY's hair)
I mean, honestly, little sweet Melody loses her father and falls into the arms of a man with a closet full of skeletons ...

Melody
(stands and begins to walk UR, with LILLITH in tow)
What do you mean skeletons?

Lillith
My family is a little dysfunctional. We're all a little odd. Uncle Mike got all the compassion and Luke got the opposite end of the stick. So as much as I love them both I don't think either is marriage material.

Melody
(sits at chess table with LILLITH)
I think your Uncle keeps his skeletons tucked away for a reason, b-but it appears a few of you have decided to pop out at the worst possible time.

Lillith
Or at the best possible time... As a religious person I assume you take the whole "to death do us part" thing seriously?

Melody
Of course I do. Wedding vows are only meant to be taken once. And once you do, take them I mean, you're done. Game over. Throw away the key. Checkmate. Draw the curtain. I mean the happily ever after part is great if you get it, but if you don't , if your spouse turns out to be a serial killer, or have 15 children living in Canada with three different woman you are still done.

Lillith
Sweetie, you need to relax, cold feet are normal. I can assure you that I have no cousins, and as for the serial killer part you've got the wrong brother.
(laughs)
How about a game to take your mind off of it?

Melody
S-sure, why not? I love your him very much by the way. Please don't doubt that. I'm just a very nervous person.

Lillith
There's nothing wrong with worrying, it's normal. Just because fifty percent of marriages end in divorce and a fairly large percentage eventually end in homicide... There's nothing wrong with worrying. Especially when you've only known the groom 6 months.

Melody
I suppose you're right, but when you know, you know. These are just jitters.

Lillith
Jitters or skeletons rasping at the door... either way tomorrow will be a day to seal your fate.

Melody
That it will. Tomorrow I will embark on an adventure... You know I've never left Crowside? I mean I've gone a few towns over, and I've read books and movies that have transported me to other worlds, but I've never gone to Disney World! or New York! or Chicago! or Rome! Tomorrow I will embark on an adventure.

Lillith
Disney World... that's your first stop on your honey moon?

Melody
I love fairy tales, my father used to read me one every night from this huge leather bound book... It sounds silly now, but...

Lillith
It isn't silly. Checkmate! It just isn't real.

Melody
Who taught you how to play chess? You won so quickly!

Lillith
(Laughs maniacally)
Why, the devil himself taught me my tricks.
Scene 2
(Michael enters with a mug of tea)

Michael
Honey, it's chilly out here so I... What are you doing here?

Lillith
(Jumps up, grabs the tea, puts it on the table and hugs MICHAEL)
Uncle Mike! I came for the wedding of course!

Michael
You weren't invited. And neither was your father.

Lillith
If the two of us only went where we were invited we'd never see any of you! I wouldn't even know Grandpa if I didn't break the rules.
(winks)

Michael
And you wouldn't even exist if my brother didn't break the rules.

Lillith
That's very true! And that is why I'm here. Because my dear uncle has followed the rules and gotten Grandpa's blessing to marry this adorable little lady.

Melody
Um, Michael, what am I missing? You said that your brothers Gabe and Raphael were coming, but that your father, Luke and his children couldn't. Yet here is one of your nieces! One of your nieces who keeps talking about skeletons in your closet and... What am I missing?!

Lillith
Melody, honey, you haven't realized by now that their names are Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Lucifer? And I am Lillith for god's sakes! You are a pastor's child yet you have no knowledge of the archangels?

Michael
Lillith, stop now.

Melody
Michael, tell me she is insane. Please. Please tell me she is insane, or that this is a dream.

Lillith
He can't. He can't tell you what you want to hear anymore because tomorrow is your wedding, and he is too good of a being to lie to you.

Michael
I love you, and I am the first son of god. My niece is a demon who was born without permission or blessing from my father.

Lillith
Half archangel, half human, and today I am a messenger. This union can't happen.

Michael
Tomorrow, if she will still have me, Melody will be my wife.

Melody
Of course I will still have you, I love you more than I can describe, but this is a lot to take in...
(sips tea)

Lillith
You cannot marry him! This is some cosmic joke. Uncle Michael please, father will be here soon.

Michael
Lilly, tell me why he doesn't want me to marry her, and don't lie.
(takes LILLITH's hand)

Lillith
The prophet said that the child that comes from the union of a woman with a heavy, and large heart and the most dedicated original brother will bring the downfall of my father.

Michael
Forever I have looked for a woman to be my partner, while your father acts however he likes. The whole family has always been irresponsible and joyful, while I've cleaned up messes and gone through proper procedures. What did the prophet mean when he said downfall?

Lillith
We aren't sure. Either way you can't marry her. We'll stop it at any cost.

Michael
You will not harm a single hair on my beloved's head.
Scene 3
(LUKE enters from stage left)

Luke
She won't, and niether will I. Hello everyone.

Melody
Alright, enough, where are the cameras?

Luke
Well you must be Melody. Wow. Gorgeous isn't she?
(kisses MELODY's hand)

Melody
You are not a shy devil. Seriously, please, Michael, this joke has gone on long enough...

Michael
(steps between MELODY and LUCIFER)
Brother, it's been a long time. Melody, unfortunately this is not a joke. This is my family.

Lillith
Hi, Daddy!
(moves toward LUKE, hugs him, MELODY sits on bench, MICHAEL stands next to her, holds hand)

Luke
Hello dear, have you gotten everyone up to date?

Lillith
Yes, sir.

Luke
And so my brother knows if he marries this woman he will effectively be ruining my life.

Michael
I know. And I do not care.

Luke
Oh, but you do care. It is your fatal flaw. You can't do anything that will hurt your family.

Michael
(MICHAEL and LUKE sit at the chess table, LILLITH sits next to MELODY)
Melody is my family.

Luke
How about we play a game of chess, and place a wager on it.

Michael
What is the wager?

Luke
If I win I get to kill her, and we go to Bermuda for a long weekend, if you win I kill her and we go to Ireland, that's where you usually vacation right?

Michael
You know I won't agree to anything where she is harmed.

Luke
Fine. Hmm. How about if I win the wedding is off and we wipe her memory of the last few months, and if you win... if you win you can live your lives until your offspring's twentieth birthday, at which time we let the cousins battle.

Michael
Hahaha! You always have been the funny one. Try this one on for size. If I lose we can live until our offspring's twentieth birthday, at which time we let your youngest battle my oldest child, and if I win we live our lives happily ever after and I will do my best to make sure the prophet is wrong.

Luke
I would protest, but I know you. This is the best offer I am going to get. So, I'll take it.

Lillith
Daddy! The youngest is a woman named Anne Coulter... I don't think this is a good idea.

Luke
Shut up. I said I will take the deal.

Melody
W-W-Wait! Ok so in the last two hours I've found out that my soon to be husband is an archangel and now he is agreeing to let the devil sick a demon on my first born because a freakin' prophet has said that he or she will kill her uncle. This is too twisted to be a joke.

Lillith
It-

Melody
Shut up. Just play already so this night can be over.

Narrator
(NARRATOR voice heard, but not seen)
And so they played. Maybe in twenty years I will tell you how it turned out.
