CHARACTERS:
RACHEL - a simple girl, 18-20 years old
YOUTH- a young, spirited girl, about 8 or 9
AMBITION- she is dressed smartly. She is educated and independent.
DESIRE- the classic "bad boy" type of person. He doesn't care about anything except things he wants
DREAM- a complete psychopath. He has wide staring eyes and an absent, creepy voice.
REALITY- she is an uptight, yet caring, woman.
ADULTHOOD- a complete realist. He is always laid back
DOCTOR

[RACHEL stands in the middle of the stage, with a single spotlight on her.]

RACHEL: Where am I?

[looks around, rest of stage is still black]

[ a soft chuckle is heard off stage]

RACHEL: who...who's there?

[pauses]

RACHEL: Hello?

[pauses]

RACHEL: Please! Someone! Where am I?

[spotlight next to her on the right turns on. YOUTH walks into the light and giggles]

[ RACHEL turns around suddenly]

RACHEL: Who...who are you?

[YOUTH giggles again]

YOUTH: Do you really want to know? Do you?

[RACHEL nods]

YOUTH: [playfully] Well, I'm not telling you!

RACHEL: Can you at least tell me where I am?

YOUTH: Your mind.

RACHEL: My... Mind?

YOUTH: yup! And I bet you didn't expect to find me here!

RACHEL: [confused] well, if it is my mind, I didn't really expect to find anyone here.

YOUTH: Rachel, you forgot about me! How could you?
RACHEL: I don't even know who you are!

YOUTH: [rolls eyes] I'm your youth, Rachel! You completely left me a few years ago!

RACHEL: My youth?

YOUTH: Duh! I just said that! But you don't care anyways. Don't you?

RACHEL: well, um...

YOUTH: exactly! Good bye Rachel!

[stomps off stage like an angry child]
RACHEL: wait!

[YOUTH'S spotlight goes dark]

RACHEL: come back!

[stares at the darkness around her. She starts to step out of the spot light, but a sharp voice startles her]

AMBITION: you shouldn't have done it, you know...

[RACHEL feverishly looks around]

RACHEL: he-hello? Youth? Is that you?

[spotlight to the left of RACHEL goes up, with AMBITION standing in it]

AMBITION: nope, it's me.

RACHEL: who are you?

AMBITION: Your ambition. You could've been a great surgeon, Rachel, why did you do it?

[spotlight goes up on the right of RACHEL, DESIRE is standing in it]

DESIRE: Cause she wanted to! [to RACHEL] Babe, I'm proud of you![Swings his arm around her shoulder] Taking the drugs just cause you wanted to! Sleeping with all those men! You made me so happy!

AMBITION: don't listen to him. He's the one who made you who you are, after all.

RACHEL: who...is he?

AMBITION: Desire. But he's just full of empty pleas and joys.

DESIRE: aw, c'mon. I'm not that bad!

AMBITION: yes, you are.

DESIRE: No! Rachel, come with me! You could be queen! Have anything you want! Do anything you want!

AMBITION: come with me! You could save lives, you could be smart!

DESIRE: No, me!

AMBITION: Me!

[RACHEL holds her head. DESIRE and AMBITION's voices and spotlights slowly fade out]

RACHEL: I need to get out of here!

[DREAM creeps up to her. RACHEL turns around and shrieks]

DREAM: or you could just stay in here with me.

[REALITY creeps up on the other side]

REALITY: or you could come back to me.

DREAM: you idiot! [pushes REALITY out of the spotlight] don't listen to Reality! She's a worthless piece of disappointing junk! She's not worth living for!

[REALITY pushes DREAM out of the spotlight and grabs RACHEL's hand]

REALITY: don't listen to dream! You'd go crazy living with him! Look at him! He's a complete psychopath!

RACHEL: Guys, wait! I don't want to live with either of you!

[DREAM steps into the spotlight]

DREAM and REALITY: why?

RACHEL: neither of you are sane, first of all.

DREAM: so you'd rather live in this empty hole?

[ADULTHOOD walks in]

ADULTHOOD: it's a good choice, Rachel. I suck.

RACHEL:and you are...?

ADULTHOOD: Adulthood. don't go back. It's complete chaos either way. Nothing's better then too much.

RACHEL: wait, guys, I have to clear my head.

REALITY: no, you have to decide right now. Who is it? You should come to me!

DREAM: No! Me!

ADULTHOOD: no, come with me!

[red lights come up, as everyone else comes on stage, saying "come with me!" "No, me!" "Me!" Etc.]

RACHEL: STOP!

[lights flash off, and she is left with her spotlight. She sinks into a fetal position. Regular lights slowly fade on. DOCTOR walks in.]

DOCTOR: had a nice nap, I see?

RACHEL: Where am I?

DOCTOR: you're at the mental hospital.

RACHEL: mental hospital?

DOCTOR: yes. Do you need anything?

RACHEL: no...

[DOCTOR exits. Everyone else surrounds RACHEL and leads her off stage.]

[blackout]

This is really good! I think it could be a little bit longer though. I want to know a littebit more of her backstory. what caused her to be in a mental hospital? Little details like that will make the characters more relateable and make the audience feel more for her. If you plan on making it longer, I would LOVE to read it as well :)

wow! this is excellent. i really like the idea you have. i would suggest adding more to it in the middle with all of the characters, (like Ambition and Dream and REality etc) so the audience could get more familiar with each character's purpose. i love the ending at the mental hospital. youre really talented! keep writing :)
