Humans are no longer what they used to be. The kind, understanding people they once were, it’s all gone. That’s why they decided to do this. It would be difficult, letting go of what they had. But it would only grow worse.

“You do know what this means, right?” Castor asked, worryingly.

“Of course I do. I know that nothing will ever be the same after this but it’s our only choice.” she said.

They both knew that wasn’t true but it was too late now. They had worked towards this for the past three years. To think of it, a lot truly had changed during that time. Neither could imagine what would happen if they stayed. Would they become one of the others? They couldn’t risk that.

Leighton laid down on the platform, her nerves colliding.
“There are certain machines for different types of work. This first one will start off on the interior. Then, that one over there will work on your memory, mind and feelings. Lastly, it will convert your heart.” he explained.

“No feelings, no emotions, just mind controlling the rest. What is left of me, at least.” she pointed out.
Castor nodded, but made no comment. He leaned down and kissed her forehead.

“When you are fully converted, you won’t remember me, at least not what you felt towards me.” he looked at her one more time before powering the system.
Leighton felt tears brimming her eyes but knew they couldn’t turn back now.

He laid down on the second platform, letting his life be taken away.
