Helpless

It was just one of those moments, where you know in your gut that you weren't getting a happy ending. Everything slowed down and I remember every detail; the jerk of the steering wheel, and the strong composure my mom had that didn’t match the terror in her eyes, Jamie’s escaped scream, and the overwhelming feeling that as everything was falling apart there was absolutely nothing to do to stop it.

It was in that moment that I truly realized what it feels like to be helpless.
But the clearest part of the chaos I can’t forget, no matter how hard I try, is the piercing dark eyes of the other driver who looked straight at me, and shamelessly pushed forward. Ending the lives of the people I loved most.
