Tender tears dripped from a soft brown eye. He was in trouble. I went over to him, put my hand on his shoulder, and was pushed away. The schoolhouse was always dark those days. But for Jamal, losing someone, it was darker. So I saw comfort in that eye when I said, “my dad too.”
