A mass of people crowd the streets. We drive by as I glance at a women holding a sign that reads “FAIR WAGES FOR ALL” and chants “All we want is one more cent, to feed our families and pay our rent!” More women file in from all directions to support the protest.

My dad stops at the red light. I listen to the radio about a protest in Chicago that has turned violent: “Three officers have been shot and many others wounded.” Meanwhile, there is a sea of people peacefully protesting before me. The light turns green. We drive by and I ask my dad, “What makes people want to protest?” He answers with, “When people want to stand up for what they believe in.”
Protesting can be beneficial to society. However, there are times when it can cause destruction and violence. Gandhi, a great man, influenced many people by peaceful protests. His words left behind messages that help us “be the change you want to see in the world,” said Gandhi. He taught us that changes can be made without violence.
