The Pink Coat
It’s dark but there’s enough light that I can see what’s in front of me. I can see that she’s standing in front of me. Her coat looks black in the night, but I know it’s pink. She loves that coat. She looks up from the ground and stares at me. Her look tells me what words cannot. I tell myself that if I could go back I would do things differently, but to be honest I don’t think I would. A tear forms in her eye, but we both know this is for the best. She pulls her coat tighter and nods her head as if she heard what I thought. She takes a step towards me, and I take a step backwards. I see the hurt on her face but I know that if she touched me, I’d never let go. She steps back to where she was and turns and walks away. I call to her, but she’s already too far away to notice.
