[Dim white light up on a teenage girl grunting as if carrying a heavy load and sobbing, knife in hand kneeling down center]

[Enter a boy of the same age]

Micah: No! [crosses to Grace where he quickly takes her knife and throws it a short distance from her dropping to his knees and pulling her in an embrace]

[A beat filled with panting]

[Grace looks up at Micah and he looks down at her. A beat as Grace studies his face then moves slightly toward the knife, breaking the embrace]

Micah: No. [lets go of Grace and walks off without a movement to return as Grace watches

The author's comments:
I fell in love with theatre the year I wrote this. It originated as a short story with two nameless characters, male and female, but I had always imagined it on-stage. This is a very personal piece because, not too long ago, this scene actually played out by some twist of fate.
