Tradition. Decorating trees and wrapping presents at Christmas, having a turkey on Thanksgiving, collecting candy on Halloween, coloring eggs for Easter. Why do we do it? Do we do it to mark the passing of time, to make something fun for the kids to do? These traditions certainly aren't spiritual rituals. I'm no longer a little kid, yet I still have fun coloring Easter eggs. I think it's part of the process of busy adults getting to become kids again, setting everything aside and having fun for a few days out of each year. Also, tradition is something we can cling to when everything is changing, and it gives us stories, memories, and customs to hand down to our own children for years to come.
