It's actually a technique called rubbing.  I painted a layer of orange brushed with yellow and painted the subject matter on top so everything you see has a layer of orange underneath it.  Afterwards I took a damp cloth and "rubbed" some of the top color off.  My hope was for it to resemble fire in some way
