"Poetry and art are when you take decades of thought and condense it into a nifty little portable carrying case that people can see and go 'Oooh, Ahh'... and then forget about it. But what does it matter, so long as YOU remember it?" ~ Bela

This does and does not strike me as one of my better works. As a whole, I think it's a tad lacking. the pose comes across to me as awkward and forced, (mostly it's the boy's pose that annoys me) Given the situation, and what I had to work with, I think I did a good job. I only got $50 for this one (about half of what I would normally charge), because it was a friend of my dad's, and my dad asked me to do it as a favor to him. I later wanted to kick myself for charging even that much. Dad didn't tell me why he wanted this drawing before he paid me. See, his friend Mike was a fellow member of the Cocaine anonymous program my dad was in. And Mike... had lost his fourteen year old son a couple years ago. (It may or may not have contributed to Mike's drug use, I don't know. but I wouldn't be surprised, I feel horrible for him) He was not a photo-shooting man, and sadly, it meant that he had only one photograph of his son before he died. It was a blurry picture of the boy without his shirt on, shaving cream covering half of his face, while he held a razor. His first time shaving. But this was the photo I was given as a reference for this drawing. The reference for Mike was a photo he took himself, a bit awkward, as most self-portrait photos are. I couldn't turn this drawing down after knowing this, but I can't say it was easy making up details in a face that was partially hidden. I had to clothe the boy, fix his face, draw him as detailed as possible from a very blurry, old photo, and then try to merge him with his father into one drawing. The reselt was even more awkward, until I put the boy's hand over the man's shoulder. Still awkward to me, but the best I could manage at the time. From what I've heard from my dad, Mike actually talks to this picture every day... (not in the crazy kind of way, he's not insane... just... like praying in front of a picture) I know my dad knew I wouldn't charge anything for it had I known all this ahead of time, but he didn't tell me until after. I think he felt that Make would be offended if I charged nothing, like charity. And Dad obviously knew him better than I, still, I feel guilty that I couldn't have done it better, and that I charged so much for something so sentimental.

This is so sweet, I think you did an amazing job, considering what you had tot work with. Thank you for posting this, and thank you for telling the story behind it. <3

If I love you, what business is it of yours?

Awesome, and touching story.
