University of Maryland: TERP Young Scholars

July 8 - July 27

The University of Maryland’s TERP Young Scholars Program is the perfect summer camp for academically talented teenagers who want to earn college credit, pursue academic interests, explore career opportunities, and discover college life at the University of Maryland.

During three weeks of intellectual exploration, teens preview the university experience, study with students who share similar interests, and engage with some the University of Maryland's best faculty in a dynamic, challenging classroom environment. Upon successful completion, students earn three college credits that post to their the University of Maryland transcript.

The TERP Young Scholars Program offers college courses that are at the cutting edge of theory, thought and technology.  The three-credit introductory course includes career discovery through field trips or guest speakers.  Classes generally meet every day, Monday through Friday.  The program offers over 20 courses that include:

  • Architecture
  • Business and Technology
  • Communication
  • Computer Science
  • Engineering
  • Forensic Sciences
  • Government and Politics
  • Humanities and the Arts
  • Journalism
  • Life Sciences
  • Movement and the Human Body
  • Psychology

The Young Scholars Program is a great introduction to the University of Maryland.  Participants benefit from the University of Maryland's vast resources, including libraries, computer and instructional labs, and recreational, residential and dining facilities.  Workshops and seminars featuring speakers in innovative career or academic fields further enrich the learning experience.   Students enjoy trips to nearby Washington, DC, movie nights, activities at the student union, mixers, and more.

The Young Scholars Program is open to rising high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have an academic average of 3.2 or better.  The application process includes submission of the application, high school transcript, and a letter of recommendation.

Q & A with University of Maryland Young Scholars Program

Q: What makes your camp or program unique?

A: In the University of Maryland’s Young Scholars Program, teens discover career opportunities while pursuing academic interests.   Plus, field trips, guest speakers, and social activities provide an overview of college life at UMD.  With a modicum of supervision and guidelines in place, Young Scholars are responsible for attending classes and for productively managing their time with minimal supervision.

Q: Describe a typical day in your camp or program.

A: Young Scholars attend courses daily, engaging with exceptional faculty while working with equally talented peers.  In the afternoons, students attend seminars, workshops, or other activities.  Participants enjoy additional social activities in the evenings and on weekends. All activities highlight what a typical UMD student experiences.  Academics, however, are stressed.   Students should expect to spend time in the afternoons and evenings studying, working on projects, or preparing for quizzes and exams.

Q: What type of teenager participates in your camp or program?

A: The Young Scholars Program targets academically talented, college-bound students.  The most successful students are those who have a strong academic background, are mature, and motivated to succeed.

Q: Where do your participants come from?

A: Young Scholars come from throughout the United States—and the program has a strong international component.  Young Scholars make lifelong connections with other students, making this a great experience.

Q: What is the housing like and what can you tell us about the meals?

A: Residential students live in traditional-style, air-conditioned UMD dormitories and are supervised by program mentors.  Most students have one roommate of the same gender and share bathrooms with same-gender participants.  Students enjoy meals within designated campus dining halls and various eateries.

Q: Please describe what teens have to say about your program.

A: Students have provided very positive feedback about the program.  They enjoy the academic rigors and appreciate the opportunity to grow and learn in a University setting.  Plus, they always have lots of fun!

Q: Any other information you think teens should know about your program?

A: The Young Scholars Program is challenging and rewarding.   Students have the opportunity to demonstrate that they can be successful in a university environment.  Upon program completion, Young Scholars leave better prepared for the college experience—both academically and socially.
