Johns Hopkins University Summer Programs

Johns Hopkins University is a world-class academic and research institution. Our summer programs offer a comprehensive range of courses for college and pre-college students.

  • Discover Hopkins (2 weeks) offers themed, hands-on courses in the health fields with leading experts. Spend time in the specialized laboratories, visit world-renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital (medical courses only), and go on field trips. For advanced pre-college students.
  • Summer University (5 weeks) offers JHU's world-class university courses over intense five-week sessions. For undergraduates and advanced pre-college students.
  • For those who want the Summer University experience in a smaller package, our Mini-Term (2 weeks) program offers Summer University course content over intense two-week terms. For undergraduate and advanced pre-college students.

What draws teens to your program?

Discover Hopkins is our primary pre-college program. Students who attend DH tend to have an interest in exploring careers in the health fields and research. In short, our main draw is science and pre-med preparation.

What type of teen attends your program?

Our students tend to be academically driven, culturally diverse, and passionate about their fields of interest. They have fun doing hard work.

Where do your participants come from?

JHU summer students come from all over the world. In addition to all 50 US states, participants come from China, South Korea, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, South America, and Europe.

What's a typical day like?

Each Discover Hopkins course meets from 9 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday, for two weeks. Because students spend all day in class, instructors do not assign a lot of homework. Most DH students stay in JHU's pre-college dormitory, and participate in structured, mandatory activities outside class time, including weekends. Students generally do not have too much unstructured free time in the two-week session.

Summer University and Mini-Term courses resemble traditional college courses. Students meet for part of the day according to the course schedule, then work on homework and projects outside class. Residential pre-college Mini-Term students are included in Discover Hopkins activities, but may opt out if they must do work. Residential SU students have more free, unstructured time in which they can work independently.

What should participants expect to learn or take away from your program?

For Discover Hopkins, students receive a realistic introduction to a career in the health fields. All Discover Hopkins courses award 1 credit.

For Summer University and Mini-Term, students challenge themselves with world-class academic content and meet college prerequisites through JHU's college courses. Summer University courses award 2, 3, or 4 credits; Mini-Term courses award 1 credit.

What are past participants saying about your program?

From Sally Lu, Discover Hopkins alumna, current JHU undergraduate:

"Being apart of the Discover Hopkins summer program was an amazing experience that allowed me to fall in love with Hopkins. Not only did I get to experience campus life, I had an engaging course that took us to government agencies around Baltimore. We also had the opportunity to explore our nation's capital and become acquainted with other prospective students from around the world.

"The Hopkins summer program also allowed me to be independent and prepare for 'college-level responsibilities' and gave me the chance to explore a class that was outside of my comfort zone. As an early decision applicant [to JHU as an undergraduate], spending the summer at Hopkins showed me that this community was my perfect fit."
