Video Production Camp | Summer Program Guide | Teen Ink

Video Production Camp

Offered on the campuses of Stanford and UC Berkeley, Video Production Camp is a fun and exciting program that allows teens to work directly with professionals in the field of industrial film and video production.  Students will learn to utilize titles, graphics, music, voice-over and live-action video while developing leadership, communication, project management, creative design and technical skills. Students work in a lab equipped with all the video cameras, production lighting, and PC-based editing systems so that they may learn-by-doing as they shoot and edit their own movies. A professional staff of instructors with over twenty years in film, television and video production guides students through a fun and exciting educational experience. Dynamic instructors, a full program of elective activities and the latest production technology provide a nurturing summer camp environment with a challenging edge.

Our Video Production Camp is offered to both middle and high school students, as well as an advanced curriculum for high school students with some digital filmmaking experience.

What draws teens to your program?

Education Unlimited Video Production Camp programs allow students to learn new skills in video production with their peers who share their interests in an environment that is positive, cooperative, and exciting. Our students are eager to broaden their knowledge and work together with others to create awesome short film projects. They have the opportunity to learn from industry professionals who provide them with the knowledge and techniques that will help them develop narrative projects and bring them to completion.

What type of teen attends your program?

Our students are aspiring filmmakers who want to learn how to hone their craft. Some have made their own short films before, while others are interested in filmmaking but have not had the opportunity to create a movie. They want to work together to tell stories, to learn from an experienced instructor and from each other, and continually grow as artists.

Where do your participants come from?

Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and locations. We welcome students from across the United States and from other countries who are interested in learning about filmmaking in a university campus environment.

What's a typical day like?

Our instructors start the day by providing students with some background information on a topic, which is then scaffolded by allowing the students to practice the techniques that were introduced. Classroom segments are followed by field work that includes writing scenes, setting up lighting, framing shots, and shooting video in a variety of campus locations. In the evenings, students can work together to edit their footage and plan the steps that they hope to accomplish on the following day.

What should participants expect to learn or take away from your program?

Our video production camp programs offer students from varying skill levels enrichment material related to directing, editing, screenwriting, acting, cinematography, and more. By the end of the week, students have created a short video project that they can show to their friends and family, and which can also be used as a portfolio piece as they begin to look for university film school programs, filmmaking internships, and production jobs down the line.

What are past participants saying about your program?

"I love staying in the dorms and having that sort of college experience for two weeks. Having so much hands-on learning in video production was great too and the experience helped me learn much quicker than a lesson. I liked that we started filming right away. This camp was much more professional and advanced than the other video production ones I've attended. The computers and cameras we used were awesome and make a difference between our videos and homemade ones. The instructor has a great way of quickly explaining things so that you get it right away and has a lot of knowledge of how films are made in Hollywood. I felt like it was a real production rather than just a camp."
