The epidemic is spreading,

of a disease not curable by medication,

but a disease of medication.

The sickness goes down through heirs of the infected,

in a cycle that never ends but gets stronger.

The heirs, stripped free of life, somehow survive,

but cannot live in their own mind.

They are born with the illness set inside them,

they try to end the struggle with medication, they're gone.

Gone forever in a mind not their own,

deluded by the haze of their worsening sickness,

they embrace it when it becomes a part of them,

pass it down like sick royalty.

The author's comments:

I wrote this poem about drug addicts and their cycle of addiction. This is about how when drug addicts have children, the child is almost destined to do drugs, and when they do, they're on drugs then, and I believe it's impossible to fully kick an addiction. I am very passionate about this subject and I hate to see a child's life ruined because of addict parents or drug addiction
