PLEASE STOP USING GOD AS A REASON FOR YOUR HOMOPHOBIA!

Yes, I know that Leviticus 18:22 says that two males should not lay together.
I also know that Leviticus 18:10 says that if a man rapes a woman,
they should both be put to death.
Now, I’m not saying I don’t believe in the Bible,
I’m just saying maybe God had some issues prior to the Resurrection.

If you’re going to tell me that being gay is a sin,
I guess you’d better stop cutting your hair, or wearing two types of fabric at the same time, or gossiping, or eating bacon, or eating too much.
The Bible prohibits all these things, but more importantly,
it commands us to love.

I believe in a God who cares less about who I love, and more about how.
I believe in a God who doesn’t make mistakes,
which is to say that Gay people are not an accident, or a side effect,
or a choice.

Because, if God hates gays, then why are we so stinking cute?
And, how come the people who make me feel the safest, and the most loved, and the closest to
God, are all queer?

Meanwhile, some people who call themselves Christians
have made me feel so guilty over who I am,
that I have questioned if God is even real.

If He is,
Would He love me for who I am,
or would He send me to conversion therapy?
Tell me my love is a wrong “choice,”
that my very existence is a sin?

When you’ve been told for so long that your love; your sanity, is going to send you straight to Hell,
It’s easy to start believing that lie.
You begin to wonder if you’re really cut out for this whole “Christian thing” anyway,
or if it’s even worth the fight.

Freedom comes when you realize that not all God’s people are a reflection of Him.
When you find a way to accept yourself for who you really are, and
decide to never be ashamed of love.

God is Love;
He could never deny Himself.

If you think that love is wrong,
keep your hate out of this church.
This sacred space of healing,
where so many of us have found God,
in line breaks, and turned pages,
and ourselves, and each other.

Hate should not live here.

So, please,
Stop condemning the greatest commandment;
LOVE.

The author's comments:

A girl in my poetry club read a whole poem about how she doesn't support the LGBTQ+ Community because God "doesn't agree with that lifestyle." I took this really personally, because I'm Bisexual, but also a hard-core Catholic. This is my response poem to her, but it's really something I needed to write for my own healing.
