been sold to the chain gang
my sisters and i
sold by doctor Thompson
made my kinfolks cry

for we all know
there ain't nothin' we can do
so we're just praying
that the Lord'll see us through

we're just hopin'
that some merciful person
will come by
and guide us to freedom
my sisters and i

but if it ain't in God's will
for us to be free
we'll hold tight
my sisters and me
