A Walk Into Hell

Cursed to torment far beyond
For the things I have done,
This burning in my blood
Makes me want to run.

The fire in my bones –
A ballad I shall sing…

You and I, we used to stand
Back to back, side by side.
We fought the demon fire;
We never feared to die.

The fire in my bones –
It burns to be set free…

Look up, stay with me;
It was I who pulled you back.
I caught you as you fell;
I saved you from the black.

The fire in my bones –
This ballad none can see…

My friend, my dear companion,
The trap is closing in…
We have little chance to flee;
Not even to the winds.

The fire in my bones –
This venomous sting…

When at last the door is closed,
Only then do I hear you cry:
“Who betrayed us to the demons?
Who left us here to die?”

The fire in my bones -
Chained with scalding rings…

I know who left you to the demons;
I know who let you die…
I tell you now, my dear companion:
The blame alone is mine.

The fire in my bones –
It devours when it’s free…

“What must I pay?”
I asked the fallen angels’ price –
How could I refuse?
It was my way to paradise.

The fire in my bones -
Cursed to burn through me…

Your hand slipped from mine;
I let it fall free…
I watched you plunging down,
Gone into the deeps.

I let the fire loose
The fire in my bones…

I am your traitor;
I have ransomed you in:
I have walked you into hell;
It was I who let you in…

Farewell, my dear companion;
Farewell, my only friend.

It is time to let the demons
Have the price that I agreed:
Just one soul I had to give…
It is yours that sets me free.
