Today is going to be the best day ever it's thursday, and it’s our christmas party. The day was perfect not to bad outside and everyone is together. As family members start to trickle in, as my dogs raise hell. My mom's grandma walks in, smelling like vanilla she takes one step in the door and my dog Ginger freaks out and tries to bite her. My grandma sits down and smiles at us, which never happens.
“You guys hungry? dinner is done” she smiles at me “yes please, can I have chili?” I send the smile back “yeah just careful it’s really hot.” I get a bowl and grab chili for people who want it and my grandma looks at me and says “My chili is better” she whispers I smile because we all know it’s true. We all finishing eating, and started handing out presents. I feel loved at this moment, I feel like I’m living a fairytale everyone is so happy and laughing and just enjoying the moment we have together. Sometimes I wonder what will happen when I have kids, because they're never gonna know the people I know.
“Anyone wanna play chess?” she yells this time to make sure everyone can hear her. I tap her shoulder and play against her, for seventy six year olds she’s a pretty smart lady. We all start to gather in the dining room, some people are eating and others are playing games like chess, checkers, and uno. For the first time in thirteen years I heard that woman laugh, I never thought I would hear that. I remember her laughing and giggling and happy, I mean yeah she was happy every other holiday but this one was different. Everyone together, light snow not to cold, wrapping paper everywhere. One thing that I enjoyed was my grandma and I were sitting at the table and we were talking about how I have never seen her so happy, and she told me “ I choose to be happy when I see everyone I love together without the drama.” To me she is the wisest person I know.
“Hey mom can we all play uno?” I say with the cherrist voice, “sure” she says with kind words. We all start playing and my grandma laughs and tries to cheat, that's what I love about her she wants to make people happy knowing she is happy. Laughter fills the chilly air with christmas lights everywhere and chocolate goodies. I think after this night I can always look back and see how much I actually loved and still love my grandma, she did what was right and was always wise and gave the best advice. For the rest of my days I will remember how much she loved me for me and not because I was the step daughter of her grandkid she thought of me as her grand daughter , so when I have kids I can tell them about how much fun I had with my grandma.
