Reflecting on Charlottesville

On August 11 and 12, 2017, members of the white nationalist party gathered to protest Charlottesville City Council's decision to remove Confederate monuments from public spaces. In recent years, certain residents and council members had advocated for the memorials to be taken down, but members of the community had resisted.

It takes courage to stand up for your beliefs. Some elected officials risk their careers to do right by their community and country. In Profiles in Courage, JFK told eight stories of political courage. Here's your chance to write a new profile in courage. Write a 1,000 word essay on an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1917. First-place winner receives $10,000. Contest deadline: January 4, 2018.
