When I saw the title of the poem “Spork” I thought, “Who could possibly write a poem about a spork?” After reading, I realized why the author chose to use a spork as their subject. The spork represents people who have been pushed aside for their race, ethnicity, and/or religion. Due to this, they feel unwanted in society for being different when in reality, they are actually really special.
In the poem, the author, Joshua Berger, talks about discrimination due to difference. In “Spork”, a spork asks the spoons and forks if he could sit with them. Both say no because the spork is not a spoon and not a fork. He ends up sitting alone and feeling dejected for being different. I feel like the message is portrayed really well through the spork’s point of view because in the real world, people also feel unwanted because of their race and/or ethnicity. “For he never knows he’s beautiful,” Joshua writes, “Only that he’s different.”
