"Er, hi Jess," he replied blankly, his eyes never meeting mine. I noticed the girls eyes fluttering up and down my chosen outfit, no doubt wondering why Brad had ever dated someone like me. "Brad, aren't you going to intoroduce me?" She asked in an annoyingly high pitched voice.

"It's nice to meet you Arlene," I said, determined to keep my eyes from wandering down to my tattered shoes. Her outfit alone made me feel inferior.

"The pleasures all mine," she cherped back, fluttering her exsquisitely long eye lashes.

"Jess," I smiled, playing along for a little while longer. "And may I say it's such a pleasure meeting Brad's new girlfriend. Have you by chance met his wife yet, Arlene? Now, there's a winner." ((Sorry, a little long, but I had to.))

Arlene's long lashes batted in confusion, "Excuse me?"

Brad's face flushed to the color of Arlene's lips. "Um...well, I..."

((Ahahha I love this story!!! But can someone tell me if there's meant to be a limit to each reply? If there is I'm really sorry I probs went over)) It all happened so fast. One second I was waiting for the realisation to sink in. Her dumbfounded face all pitifully confused. The next, her hand connected with Brad's face right in front of my very eyes. This was better than any soap opera. She'd slapped him hard. "To think that I ever loved you!" tears were streaming down her face now, leaving dark marks of black eyeliner. She turned and strutted away in her tall red heels.

I glanced over at Brad, my eyes careful not to reach his, but rather they focused on the handprint across his cheek.

"So" I finally spat out, unable to contain my fury. "I guess you've forgotten about your wife then. Or should I say ex wife?" He gave me a deadly look as I emphasised the word ex. "Oh, I'm sorry do you not recall marrying my best friend Angie and then going off and taking some romantic stroll though the park with some plastic barbie doll model?"

"Jess," he began, his hands wringing together, "Angie...Angie..."

"Angie what?" I demanded, the words blasting from my mouth. A lady with a stroller passed us by, turning her head nervously as I caught her stare. Brad saw the her too, his own face changing into something that resembled self consciousness. He'd always been shy in public. Well, that was when I knew I him. Or at least thought I knew him. "What happened to you Brad?" I asked solemnly.

He bowed his head. "I never should have left you for Angie. Angie's just too much for me, you know?"

"Ah I don't even know what to say to that" I scoffed. "I'm not even talking about me or Angie! I'm talking about you! What happened to that sweet, kind genuine guy I used to know?"

I shook my head in disappointment. "I thought you were better than this," I said before turning and walking away briskly.

Tick. Tick. Tick. I sat on my lounge, biting down on my short, unpolished nails. I'd been staring at the phone for two hours now. Only one thought, one question to keep my mind occupied. Should I call her?

From there the rest came flooding out, an endless sea of doubt and anxiety. Does she already know? What will she say? Will she be mad? At me? Will she cry?
To be honest, I didn't know what to expect. I hadn't seen or heard from Arlene since the night of the party. How stupid I felt now, looking back on how I'd acted. The one that couldn't face the girl who married her ex boyfriend. Now things were very different. I'd make up for the lost time by supporting her in this, whether she wanted me to or not. I reached for the phone but before I could pick it up it rang, making me jump.

I sat there frozen in front of the phone. It was him. It was Brad. Each ring amplified the pounding inside my chest. Each ring brought a string of new questions. Do I answer? What could he want? What should I say? I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Shakily, I brought the phone up to my ear and prayed I didn't come across as petrified as I felt.
"Hello?"

"Hi dear, you won't believe what Angies mother just told... "Mum?" I cut her off, releasing a burst of shock and relief.
