I find that when people incorrectly use semicolons or apostrophes it is usually a simple fix and doesn't bother me. Most of the time they were just too lazy to edit thoroughly. When people incorrectly use who/whom, or nauseous/nauseated, that bothers me. Also, affect/effect. These mistakes are made not because the writer is lazy, but because the writer simply doesn't know the rule.

Most of the time, sentences can be written just as strongly without semicolons. It's best to avoid them. I advice using a conjunction, which not only feels more natural, but also gives a better hint as to how the two sentences are related.
In Kurt Vonnegut's own words:
“Here is a lesson in creative writing. First rule: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you've been to college.”

I'm a little confused here why no one knew this already. It's common English, not rocket science (although at times it may seem like it is.) I'm a little surprised so many people didn't know all this already.

I think a colon is used at the end of clauses which is meaningfull in itself rather than full sentence. For eg:"His aims were high:he got what he aimed for".

It can also be used to dictate a beginning of a list.
For Eg. "The following is important in life:eat, sleep, love, pray,"

I always find it EXCRUTIATINGLY annoying when people mis-spell every word on purpose and how they put that apostrophe next to a plural "s" instead of a possessive "s".

I think an Oxford Comma and a Comma Splice would be worthy to add to this post.
