Surviving Winter

You're in the thick of it now. The snow has gotten dirty and disgusting on the roads; the cold just won't quit. It's hard to get up in the morning and hard to sustain your energy during a long school day. You've probably got school exams coming up. You're officially in the winter doldrums, and spring's a long ways away.

Don't fear, readers - there are things to love about winter, too, and ways to kickstart your winter. The first step is to stop wishing for spring. Winter's here, it's not going anywhere soon, and you can make the best of it.

Remember the good things - Winter has its own charms. Remember the joy of snowball fights? Snow suits? Sledding? If you're in a snowy part of the world, there's still reason to rejoice. You're not too old to make snow angels or snow men. Show off your snow sculpting skills. Go sledding. Chuck a snowball at somebody. If you're not in a winter wonderland right now, enjoy winter sports and activities. Ice hockey or skating, anyone? How about just pleasantly indoor events, like bowling or shopping or museum-hopping? There are plenty of places to take shelter and stimulate yourself.

Stay warm - feeling cold is the biggest misery of winter, but there's no reason you have to be. Remember that just a parka won't do it - protect your extremities by wearing gloves, scarves, and hats. There's nothing cozier than the feeling of wool socks in fuzzy boots, is there? If you still can't beat the cold, try wearing tights under your pants. Nothing beats them for the cold.

Get enough light - some people feel depressed or down in the winter because they aren't getting enough natural light. Our bodies crave light and we feel run-down when we don't get enough. Try looking for a natural light lamp online, or just making sure you get out in the fresh air during the daylight hours. When you get home from school, spend an hour walking around outside before retreating into the dark cave of your room! You may find yourself feeling a lot more chipper if you get that sunlight in your system.

Save time for your creative life - another reason we get in the winter doldrums is because we're neglecting the things that really make us happy. What makes you happy? Have you stopped writing or drawing or singing because you're too busy? Instead of moping in a corner somewhere, try setting aside a little time every day to do something that you love. Reward yourself when you finish your homework by reading a good book or singing along with your favorite song. Don't let the winter chill suck the creativity right out of you!
