Wesleyan Summer Gifted Program is the ultimate 2 week summer camp for gifted teenagers. Great campuses with academic, performing arts and sports classes. Show off your talent at the Final Program! Read More!
The Wesleyan Summer Gifted Program is the only program of its kind in the state and the most affordable one in the region. The program offers advanced classes in physics, higher math, creative writing, computer programming, history, and science. These classes are all taught by seasoned college professors who have experience teaching gifted students in this age range.
The students room with their age-mates in the dormitory for the two-week period, eat together and attend classes on campus, and are supervised by college-age counselors who serve as guides and mentors. Many students have such a great time they return year after year.
"This program was the best experience ever! The professors were so nice. I learned so much in just two weeks,” says Kennedy James, a sixth grader who attended the program last year. “Staying on campus was really cool. We slept in the college dorms. In the evenings, we all hung out together, played games, went swimming, and ate a lot. The Wesleyan Summer Gifted Program was awesome and I can't wait to return."
Besides academics, the camp also emphasizes fun and recreation, offering extensive facilities (swimming pool, basketball and tennis courts, baseball and soccer fields, a walking trail, a full library, music practice rooms, and a new performing arts center), movies, guest speakers, group activities, and a talent show.
The program was conceived by Dr. Joseph Wiest, father of two gifted sons, and developed with a grant from NASA. The program has been under the direction of Dr. Eric Waggoner, English Professor at WVWC, for 5 years. Waggoner teaches English in the program. To be eligible, students must be identified as gifted.
Program dates for 2017 are June 18 – July 1. Applications will be accepted up until June 16. Registration is going on now and there are plenty of spots open.
