Made as a prequel to 2000's Serious Sam: The First Encounter, Serious Sam 3: BFE is a first-person shooter that is a breath of fresh air for the genre and a look back at the classic shooters of the 1990's. Set before Serious Sam 1 (BFE = Before First Encounter), Serious Sam 3 has players in the role of "Serious" Sam Stone, a solder with a simple objective: Collect information from a scientist about how to activate an ancient device called the Time-Lock, a device said to lead to another point in time. Soon, however, Sam becomes humanity's last hope as the evil alien Mental threatens to "moon" Earth. The story presented, while good, is nothing compared to the gameplay. While other shooters give players cover combat, 2 weapon slots, and regenerating health, Serious Sam 3 does nothing of the sort. The Serious Engine 3.5 adds destructible cover, making cover combat near impossible. Regenerating health, while present in the easier difficulties, is barely useful, as health packs help more. The final thing, and this make the combat fun, is this: EVERY WEAPON YOU PICK UP IS YOURS! You never have to drop weapons, and that's good because BFE is difficult, even on the easiest difficulty. The combat here is fast, maybe too fast for constant Call of Duty players. Hoards of agressive enemies launch themselves at you, making restarting at a save a common practice is Sam's world. Once you beat the 13 missions by yourself, you can replay them with 1 other person via splitscreen and 3 others via Xbox Live, or 15 others on the computer versions. If you're looking for a shooter that is different from Call of Duty or Battlefield, Serious Sam 3 is simply a must buy.
