Compared to the sea of crime scene shows on television, The Mentalist stands out as one of the best. While I did not start watching The Mentalist until the third season, I am now hooked.
The Mentalist stars Simon Baker as Patrick Jane, a former con man turned consultant for the fictional Californian Bureau of Investigation or CBI as it is commonly referred to on the show. He is assigned to Agent Teresa Lisbon’s team. While on paper she runs the team, Jane does not follow anybody. He is his own person who often finds less conventional ways to solve the case. These ways make stand this show out from the rest. The cons… okay ploys… that Jane sets up in the episodes provide laughable entertainment with an otherwise dark part of television. These ploys are set up in different ways and on different people, from murder suspects to members of his own team. While this show can make you laugh, the quest for serial killer Red John provides sinister twists and turns that haunt Jane from the beginning. This killer murdered his wife and child, so he tends to go a little crazy on cases that involve the killer. This show always provides new ways to entertain the mind in ways that other shows simply do not do. Without The Mentalist, my interest in watching fictional people look like fools on television would not be met or even close to it. Patrick Jane (and of course the writers) make this shows worth watching.
