The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a wonderful book about a boy named Charlie. Charlie is a shy, quiet boy who has the reputation of being a freak. After Michael, (Charlie’s friend) commits suicide, he doesn’t have any friends. He doesn’t have very many people he ever talks to. Charlie’s family is very reliable, yet distant. Throughout the story you see him and his sister’s relationship grow, and also him understand more about his family. Bill, Charlie’s English teacher, acts as a friend towards Charlie during his freshman year.
Charlie is nervous about starting high school, so he begins writing letters to a stranger. Within these letters he expresses his feelings and tells his darkest secrets. You hear all about his new friends that are seniors, who are outcasts just like him. Throughout the story you hear about Charlie’s experiences with love, heartbreak, drugs, and friendships. At the end if the book, a deep family secret resurfaces causing Charlie to have to go to a mental hospital. The last letter he writes states that in his sophomore year he will try to participate in life rather than watch from the side.
This novel was great. I enjoyed it very much. As I read the book I felt a strong connection to Charlie. Stephen Chbosky did a great job writing this book and making it seem real.
Before I read the book I saw the preview to the movie (the movie comes out on January 23, 2013) and thought it looked like a good movie. I decided I should read the book first to get an idea of what it would be about. After I read the first chapter of the book, I loved it. I couldn’t put it down.
Overall, The Perks of Being a Wallflower was a fantastic book. I don’t usually read books that often, but I really enjoyed this novel. The way that it was written is incredible. I would definitely recommend it for anyone.
