You were my tinfoil knight, I your princess.
We slayed dragons and kept treasures in jars,
Our cardboard castle a royal fortress,
Playing hopscotch above the crayon stars.

When did we change from throwing paper planes,
And scratching our names in the sidewalk square.
When did we ever stop driving wood trains,
And licking the icy pole if we dare.

You recall the day when we stopped playing?
Throwing your tinfoil armor to the past.
You left me in that cardboard box praying,
But I soon realized that magic can’t last.

Days turned to weeks then months, and months to years,
Left with just a cardboard box of dried tears.
