I near my bed as night has come to fall;
My life will rest once more a day in sorrow;
That all I can trust in be He, his call,
Or hope to ask a man for help to borrow.
What comes forth death may I to ask in time?
I dream a day of life forth life in pain,
Where love and grace lie deep in my dead grime;
Yet, I still ask for help to die in vain.
Ma where is He or where may lie his love,
Or you walk past the path of life to light;
I wish not to make haste of this, my dove
And learn of what is wrong and what is right;
But when time comes and he will come for me,
To you I shall give love and hope of He.

The inspiration for my poem relates to my grandfather’s passing away a year ago. Following his death, I contemplated where his soul moved on. Growing up in a religious family, I was taught to believe in the existence of an afterlife; however, as his death left me with no clues of where he went, I faced a great deal of pain pondering endlessly over what could have happened to him. My piece deals with this loss, and how I struggled to find an answer, questioning the values I was taught at an early age. Furthermore, I reference the fear of what I am subjected to endure when my time comes to pass away as well.
