It was pouring rain at the funeral
Seattle’s send off: a farewell of tears
I stood to eulogize the burial
Optimism of youth lost over years

“Once, it was rosy innocent,” I droned
“Now withered dry at life’s merciless hand.”
A child piped on her shining saxophone
The dreadful tune of hope’s bitter demand

I used to be her, that blind, hopeful girl
But life fights until it’s been defeated
Life traps you in its tornado’s black swirl
It chokes until what’s you has receded

Hence we mourn the optimism of youth
Butchered and broken and lost in the truth

This was born from a challenge from a friend, and grew up into something beautiful.

It's very rare that people rhyme this well. You've captured a lot of feeling in your words *tips hat in respect*

This is so cool! You've completely captured the tone; it reminds me of Gus's funeral. :'( "The dreadful tune of hope's bitter demand" ... Is there anything left to say? ;) Adieu to the optimism of youth.
