I answered a birthday note Liz Boykin sent
It pictured a sign whose sales message went:
“Sunset Motel. Air Cooled and Vented.
Heat. (No) Vacancy.” The West represented.
There, Liz imagined my next fifteen years.
Wishing me travel and many careers.
Above the thank-you note I sent, I drew
The picture sent by Liz, but from my view;
The sign from the card, that summed up the west,
Rusty and fading, but offering rest.
“Sunset Motel. Air Cooled and Vented.
Heat. (No) Vacancy.” World-worn and dented.
