The Girl and the Wave

She stood at the edge of the magnificent ocean,
Dress and hair blowing in the breeze,
Wondering if she should make the assumption
That life is never filled with ease.
She waded in further, sniffing the air,
And pondered the past, present, and future
Suddenly, as if to prove that life isn't fair,
A tremendous wave swept up and soaked her.
Down under the turquoise waves she went,
Without any oxygen in either lung.
When she came back up, her energy was spent,
But she lamented the tragedy of songs never sung.
How horrible it must be, she thought, to be too afraid of life
To enjoy both the happiness and the strife.
