Walking home from school basking in some newfound sunlight
See man on a bike, so I consider a ride
Something about the weather makes me feel alright
Look down to see my feet and grass collide

Snow is retreating under the trees
I guess it’s still winter but it seems like spring
As soon as I know it I’m grabbing my keys
I’ve found a new kingdom, and I hope I’m the king

Through the heaviest drifts
rise autumn’s fallen
bicycles, small carnivals
of paint and chrome,
the Octopus
and Tilt-A-Whirl
beginning to turn in the sun.

The bicycle seems to move on its own
Wind in my hair, like I’m free as a bird
I begin to feel more together because I am alone
And I take flight as I stray from the herd

This may as well be the best of I’ve ever felt
But all good things will come to an end
I see that some snow still must melt
And my fun will not extend

Through the heaviest drifts
rise autumn’s fallen
bicycles, small carnivals
of paint and chrome,
the Octopus
and Tilt-A-Whirl
beginning to turn in the sun.

As the sun sets, evening falls
And children are called back home
I walk my bike into the comfort of my walls
The memory fades like an old and dusty tome

The author's comments:

I was inspired by the feeling of freedom created by spring. This Song is also based off of Late February by Kooser. The Chorus is a selection from his poem, one that really spoke to me.
