For Now

Sometimes when I think of the future,
I get a smile on my face;
Picture saying “I do” to the man I love.
He’ll adore me and think I’m great.
We’ll live happily ever after
In our rose-covered cottage by the sea.
There’ll be plenty of money and we’ll never fight.
That sounds good to me.

But I know that’s not realistic.
Real life is not a dream.
I can’t possibly know how adulthood works
At only seventeen.
Sometimes good things fall into your hands,
But you don’t know when or how,
So I guess my future is a mystery for now.

Sometimes when I think of the future,
My heart begins to race;
Stuck in a house with an absent husband
Who’ll no longer say “I love you” every day.
He’ll never help with our two little kids
And when I ask for help he’ll refuse.
And when I can’t give him what he wants anymore,
He’ll turn to drugs and booze.

But I know that’s not realistic,
Because I know I’m no fool.
I would never willingly subject myself
To a life so cruel.
Sometimes bad things fall into your hands,
But you’ll get by somehow.
So I guess my future is a mystery for now.

Sometimes when I think of the future,
I don’t feel so bad.
Life goes up and down, left and right.
You never know what you’ll get.

I think that’s pretty realistic.
Real life is not a dream.
And I know the future is not
As distant as it seems.
Sometimes good things fall into your hands,
But you don’t know when or how,
So I guess my future is a mystery for now.
A mystery.
