"Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die." - Mel Brooks

I know we weren't together for very long
[I know you're probably disappointed in me]
But I can't deny that together we were wrong
[I could only hope that you could see]

And as I lie here thinking of what we used to be
[Please realise that we weren't a mistake]
But of course nothing is really as it seems
[Couldn't you pretend just for my sake?]

We can pretend to be something we're not
Living a lie and deceiving only ourselves
But if we speak the truth and try our best
Maybe we can figure these things out

I really hate being so alone
[Then why don't you come back to me?]
I realise now I have to find a life of my own
[How many times do I have to say please?]

We can pretend to be something we're not
Living a lie and deceiving only ourselves
But if we speak the truth and try our best
Maybe we can figure these things out

[Darling, if you came back, I promise to make you happy]
But sweetheart, you just aren't the one for me
I'm sorry

We can pretend to be something we're not
Living a lie and deceiving only ourselves
But if we speak the truth and try our best
Maybe we can figure these things out

I won't pretend to be something I'm not
Living a lie and deceiving you and myself
I'll try to speak the truth and do my best
'Cause I've already figured these things out

This is a duet piece - a boy [whose verses are in brackets] and a girl [unbracketed] - and the chorus is sung by both. This is the first duet I've written, so I hope you like it!
