Initials in a Tree

Little me,
Only sixteen,
At the beginning of July.
Previously,
You had been just some guy to me,
But now I noticed how your eyes shined.
You were the first boy
Who ever made my stomach twist.
I like to talk a lot,
But in front of you I was speechless.
The feeling was unusual,
And I was not prepared.
But now I see you with others girls,
And I don’t even care.

Sometimes I forget how much
You used to mean to me.
I can’t believe I ever carved
Our initials in a tree.
I used to dream of you at night;
Thought you were right for me.
I can’t believe I ever carved
Our initials in a tree.
Now I think I wasted time
Liking you so much,
But you’ll always be the first boy
I ever thought I loved.

I know you like that blonde girl.
It’s obvious to see.
You’re batting those long eyelashes,
But your gaze is not on me.
That’s okay.
I’m over you.
There’s a new guy in your spot.
I gave up on you months ago,
And I know it’s no loss.

Sometimes I forget how much
You used to mean to me.
I can’t believe I ever carved
Our initials in a tree.
I used to dream of you at night;
Thought you were right for me.
I can’t believe I ever carved
Our initials in a tree.
Now I think I wasted time
Liking you so much,
But you’ll always be the first boy
I ever thought I loved.

You still make me laugh
Every once in a while.
Sometimes my heart still flutters
When I see your dashing smile.
I remember why I loved you,
But I can’t get off track,
Because I’m on to bigger things
And I’m not going back.

Sometimes I forget how much
You used to mean to me.
I can’t believe I ever carved
Our initials in a tree.
I used to dream of you at night;
Thought you were right for me.
I can’t believe I ever carved
Our initials in a tree.
Now I think I wasted time
Liking you so much,
But you’ll always be the first boy
I ever thought I loved.

Sometimes I forget how much
You used to mean to me.
I can’t believe I ever carved
Our initials in a tree.
I don’t expect a lot from you;
Don’t love you endlessly,
But those initials, at one point
They meant a lot to me.
Now I think I wasted time
Liking you so much,
But you’ll always be the first boy
I ever thought I loved.

The first boy I ever loved.
