Their Words

I’ll fake a pitch
Pretend I ain’t ambitious
I’ll write it down
To cover my heartache
That’s spinning me ‘round
I’ll dream the dream
But I won’t jump the cliff,
Take the risk
I’ll fake my voice,
Muffle the sound
No one sees me under my cloak
So they can’t say I haven’t spoke
They only speak to me in faint whispers
“Words of the wise” they call ‘em

Hold your breath
You won’t inspire
It’s what’s best
Don’t aspire
Don’t waste our air
You can’t conspire
He don’t care about your prayer
You won’t inspire

I’ll write my words
But they’re just scrambled letters
I send ‘em out
In place of myself
But the whispers scream out
“You’ve got nothing!”
Sometimes they get to me,
And take my cords
They control me
What I bleed is theirs
No one sees my disguise
So there’s no need for compromise
Still they tear me down and grab my joy
Spit out their “Wise words” in a wad of lies

Hold your breath
You won’t inspire
It’s what’s best
Don’t aspire
Don’t waste our air
You can’t conspire
He don’t care about your prayer
You won’t inspire
Don’t aspire
You can’t conspire
You won’t inspire
Don’t aspire
You can’t conspire
You won’t inspire

I’ll conspire, I’ll aspire
I’ll inspire
