Don't Fade Away From Me

Little Cassie’s in her room
Daddy comes to say goodnight
She hugs him close as he kisses her on the cheek
He smiles ‘I’ll love you every day of the week’

Nine years pass, nine years gone
How far little Cassie has come from
She’s back from school and Daddy says ‘hi’
She walks right past him, she walks right by

Late at night, he sits alone
He folds his head and says in a whispered tone

‘Lord, please help my girl,
Find who she is in this crazy world
I love her too much
Don’t let her fade away from me’

She’s turned sixteen with an attitude
She’s far past being fresh, far past rude
‘I hate you so much, get outta my life’
Those words cut Daddy like a serrated knife

Another couple years have passed
Little Cassie’s growing up so fast
She’s graduating high school the very next day
Daddy’s scared to death so he gets on his knees and prays

‘Lord, please help my girl,
Find who she is in this crazy world
I love her too much so
Don’t let her fade away from me’

Ten years later, Daddy calls her phone
Little Cassie scared when she hears his tired old tone
Her mind goes blank when she hears the news
Daddy’s on his way to heaven soon

Cassie kneels by him, before he leaves
Says ‘I’m sorry for those years before, forgive me please,’
He’s weak but smiles, at his baby girl
‘Don’t worry sweetheart, you’re my whole world’

Before his last breath
He looks out the window and says

‘Lord, please help my girl,
Find who she is in this crazy world
I love her so much
And I’m fading fast from her’
